Chekhov’s ‘The Cherry Orchard’ returns to Greek stages
Anton Chekhov’s classic play, ‘The Cherry Orchard’, is returning to the Greek stage through two distinct productions.
At the Royal Theatre of Thessaloniki, the production returns for its second year under the direction and dramaturgical adaptation of Athanasia Karagiannopoulou, with a translation by David Maltezis. The play, which explores themes of social transition and the loss of the aristocracy, features a cast including Antinoos Albanis, Vasilis Eftaxopoulos, and Yolanda Baloura. The new premiere is scheduled for October 16, 2026.
Simultaneously, a new production is set for the Katia Dandoulaki Theatre, directed by Sofia Spyratou with a translation by Marios Ploritis and original music by Stefanos Korcola. This production features a prominent cast including Katia Dandoulaki, Meletis Elias, Leonidas Kakouris, and Takis Papamattheou. Both productions center on the symbolic cherry orchard as a representation of a vanishing era and the conflict between memory and necessary social change.
