Chelsea and Spanish football federation offer egg freezing to players

Chelsea FC and the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) have introduced initiatives to fund egg freezing and fertility treatments, such as IVF, for female players. Chelsea became the first Women’s Super League club to offer these services in August, while the RFEF recently reached an agreement to provide access to eligible national team players.

Alex Culvin, Director of Women’s Football for the global players' union FIFPRO, described the moves as “incredibly progressive” but emphasized that safeguards are necessary to ensure players do not feel pressured by employers to delay motherhood. While some athletes, including midfielder Alexia Putellas, welcomed the ability to manage their biological clocks alongside their careers, others expressed caution.

Spanish Olympic triple jumper Ana Peleteiro-Compaore raised concerns regarding the motivations behind institutions financing the delay of motherhood. Culvin noted that the success of such policies depends on prioritizing individual player choice to accommodate different personal perceptions.
