Chelsea defensive instability concerns raised by Paul Merson

Paul Merson has expressed concern regarding Chelsea’s defensive instability under manager Xabi Alonso. Following a 2-2 draw against newly promoted Hull City, the Blues have yet to record a clean sheet in the Premier League this season.

Merson noted that Alonso faces a significant challenge in determining his optimal defensive formation, whether utilizing a back three, four, or five, after six total matches across league and cup competitions. Despite summer investments including Morgan Rogers, Danny Welbeck, Jordan Henderson, and goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, the team has struggled to maintain defensive consistency.
