Chelsea face squad depth challenges under Xabi Alonso

Chelsea is navigating significant squad depth issues during the current Premier League campaign under manager Xabi Alonso. While the team sits fourth in the league, defensive vulnerabilities and midfield shortages have become prominent concerns.

In defense, competition for the right-back position has intensified. While Reece James remains a primary option, recurring injuries have complicated selection. Malo Gusto, who has made seven appearances this season, faces increased competition from academy graduates and young defenders. Reports suggest that if his situation changes, clubs such as Paris Saint-Germain or Manchester City could potentially interest the club regarding his transfer in 2027.

Midfield stability has also been impacted by the departure of Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City and a failed late-window attempt to sign Lamine Camara from Monaco. While Moises Caicedo has returned to full fitness, the club is relying on a mix of players including Romeo Lavia, Jordan Henderson, and teenage prospect Reggie Watson to maintain performance levels.
