Chelsea FC faces defensive crisis amid squad absences

Chelsea FC is facing a significant defensive crisis in the Premier League, having conceded 12 goals in five matches. The team currently holds the league’s worst defensive record and has yet to record a clean sheet this season, extending a streak of more than 20 matches without a shutout.

Manager Xabi Alonso is navigating these challenges amid squad instability. Key defender Pep Chavarria was unexpectedly absent from the matchday squad for the fixture against Everton, adding to the frustration of supporters following the injury to captain Reece James and the absence of Malo Gusto. In Chavarria’s place, Jorrel Hato was selected to play.

Alonso has noted that while the team aims to maintain its attacking momentum, improving defensive stability is essential. The club faces a difficult test against Everton, one of the league's unbeaten sides, as they attempt to resolve the contradictions between their offensive ambition and defensive vulnerability.
