Chelsea hires Xabi Alonso as manager, pivots to experienced signings and defends public ownership of football

Spanish former World Cup winner Xabi Alonso has been appointed manager of Chelsea Football Club, taking on both coaching and managerial duties. The club's owners, Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali, view Alonso as the right figure to restore the team to title contention and secure Champions League qualification. Under his direction Chelsea is shifting away from its recent strategy of fielding the youngest squad in the Premier League, instead targeting seasoned players. Recent high‑profile acquisitions include Morgan Rogers for a reported £117 million and French defender Maxence Lacroix, described by Alonso as possessing a "winner's mentality".

During Chelsea's pre‑season tour in Sydney, Alonso criticised FIFA's proposal to sell a stake in the commercial operations of the World Cup, arguing that football should remain "for the people" and not be placed in private hands. He echoed UEFA's opposition, warning that the sport must stay free from purely profit‑driven motives.

Alonso's first match in charge saw Chelsea defeat Western Sydney Wanderers 6‑4, with the team set to face Tottenham Hotspur later in the tour.
