Chelsea plans major squad reduction as transfer window closes
Chelsea Football Club entered the final weeks of the summer transfer window with a 41‑player senior roster, far exceeding the Premier League’s 25‑man senior squad limit. New manager Xabi Alonso has signaled that the club must offload at least 16 players before September to restore squad harmony and comply with UEFA settlement terms.
The club’s defensive department is especially congested, with ten senior centre‑backs on the books, including Axel Disasi, Benoît Badiashile and Super Eagles target Tosin Adarabioyo. Reports suggest that selling these defenders – and possibly Trevoh Chalobah – would free space for any new defensive signing, though the priority remains “sell before buy.”
Chelsea’s Asian pre‑season tour, featuring fixtures against Juventus, AC Milan and Johor Darul Ta'zim, highlighted the depth issue, with many players not even training with the first team. The squad trimming will shape the Blues’ transfer strategy for the upcoming season without European competition.
