Chelsea pursue Jordan Henderson from Brentford
Chelsea Football Club are regarded as the frontrunner in the race to sign 36‑year‑old England midfielder Jordan Henderson, who is prepared to leave Brentford on a free transfer. Brentford have indicated they will allow the move despite Henderson having a year left on his contract.
Henderson suffered a broken left arm after slipping over an advertising board during England’s World Cup celebration following the 3‑2 win over Mexico in the last‑16. He remained with the England squad through the tournament, making a brief substitute appearance before surgery.
New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso is looking to add experienced midfield depth to his squad for his first season. In addition to Henderson, the club have also shown interest in Danny Welbeck and John Stones, after earlier attempts to sign Granit Xhaka were rebuffed. Henderson’s career includes spells as Liverpool captain, a season in Saudi Arabia with Al‑Ettifaq, a stint at Ajax and a recent year at Brentford where he made 22 league starts.
