Chelsea Tantum dies at 30 after melanoma linked to tanning beds

Chelsea Tantum, a 30-year-old woman from Manchester, England, has died following a battle with advanced metastatic melanoma. Tantum began using artificial tanning beds at the age of 15, a practice she initiated as part of a social competition with friends to maintain darker skin tones.

She reported that tanning salons failed to verify her age or explain the health risks associated with ultraviolet radiation during her adolescence. Diagnosed with stage 3C melanoma at age 28, the cancer progressed rapidly, spreading to her spine, ribs, pelvis, lungs, liver, spleen, and breasts. In the final weeks of her life, the cancer reached her brain.

During her illness, Tantum became an activist, campaigning to raise awareness about the dangers of UV radiation. She advocated for stricter regulations and mandatory identity checks at beauty establishments to prevent minors from accessing tanning equipment.
