Chelsea Women advance to Champions League league phase

Chelsea Women have secured a place in the UEFA Women’s Champions League league phase after defeating Real Sociedad with a 6-2 aggregate score. Following a 5-2 victory in the first leg, Chelsea won the second leg 1-0 at Estadio Zubieta in San Sebastián.

Midfielder Keira Walsh scored the decisive goal in the second leg, earning her the ‘Star of the Match’ title with 54 per cent of the supporter vote. Defender Ellie Carpenter followed in the voting with 31 per cent. Due to their elimination from the Champions League qualifiers, Real Sociedad will move to the Europa Cup campaign.

In related transfer news, Real Sociedad has reportedly reached a verbal agreement to sign 20-year-old Chelsea defender Mamadou Sarr on a one-year loan deal. Chelsea Women are scheduled to begin their Women’s Super League campaign against Aston Villa on September 5.
