Chełm to host 160th anniversary commemorations for Mykhailo Hrushevsky
The city of Chełm, Poland, will host commemorations for the 160th anniversary of the birth of Mykhailo Hrushevsky. Hrushevsky (1866–1934) was a prominent historian and served as the chairman of the Central Council of Ukraine between 1917 and 1918. He is recognized as a key figure in the co-creation of the modern Ukrainian nation.
The program of events includes a memorial mass at the Concatedral of St. John the Theologian, prayers at a memorial cross, and the laying of wreaths at a commemorative plaque.
Additionally, an international scientific conference titled ‘Mykhailo Hrushevsky and his small homeland — Chełmszczyzna through the centuries’ will be held at the Maria Paulina Orsetti Public Library, featuring researchers from both Poland and Ukraine. The event will also include a book presentation by Yuriy Havryluk and a concert by the Ukrainian youth ensemble ‘Hiloczka’ and a local choir. The commemorations are organized by the Ukrainian Society with support from the Embassy of Ukraine in Poland and the Consulate General of Ukraine in Lublin.
