CheMAP project investigates genetic vulnerabilities in triple-negative breast cancer

The CheMAP project, coordinated by the Biological Engineering Center (CEB) at the University of Minho, is investigating new genetic vulnerabilities in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cells that have developed resistance to chemotherapy.

TNBC is considered one of the most aggressive subtypes of breast cancer, and therapeutic options remain limited. A significant challenge is the development of resistance to anthracyclines, a common group of drugs used in treatment. To address this, the project utilizes large-scale genomic screening, high-throughput sequencing, and advanced bioinformatics tools to analyze thousands of genes and identify those essential for the survival of resistant tumor cells.

The research is currently in its initial stages, focusing on optimizing experimental and computational methodologies. The project involves collaboration with the University of Vigo in the field of bioinformatics and the Institute for Research in Life and Health (ICVS) at the University of Minho School of Medicine, which is responsible for in vivo studies. The long-term goal is to develop more personalized and effective therapeutic strategies by targeting specific vulnerabilities in resistant cancer cells.
