Chemical leak at Gelato d’Italia-Glacier releases orange cloud in Cavriago

A chemical incident at the Gelato d’Italia-Glacier facility in the Corte Tegge industrial area of Cavriago released an orange cloud of nitrogen oxides. The incident occurred when nitric acid reportedly came into contact with another unidentified substance, causing a rapid temperature increase and the violent expulsion of a tank lid.

Emergency responders, including a national NBCR task force specialized in nuclear, biological, chemical, and radiological risks, monitored the site throughout the night. Local authorities, including the Mayor of Cavriago, Francesca Bedogni, coordinated with the Carabinieri, Arpae, and the fire department. While residents were initially advised to keep windows closed, air quality monitoring by Arpae has not detected pollutants, and no injuries or intoxications have been reported among workers or residents.

The leak has been contained, but production remains halted. A specialized company is scheduled to begin cleanup operations to empty the tank, which still contains approximately one thousand liters of nitric acid. The removal of the tank is expected to be completed by early next week.
