Chemmani mass grave excavation identifies 544 sets of remains

Excavations at the Chemmani mass grave site in Jaffna have uncovered a significant number of human remains, bringing the total identified at the site to 544. During a recent single-day recovery, 15 sets of remains were found, including the remains of five children believed to be in the infant to toddler age range.

Investigators recovered several personal artifacts during the dig, including a one-rupee coin and a numbered amulet marked ‘516’. Officials noted that such items may serve as critical identifiers to help match the remains with missing individuals reported by families during Sri Lanka’s civil war. Other recovered items include a child’s milk bottle, a school bag, bangles, and toys.

The Chemmani site has been a focal point of contention regarding enforced disappearances since the late 1990s. As the current court-authorized excavation phase nears its end, findings in test pits suggest the burial site may be considerably larger than the area currently under investigation. Preliminary planning is underway to expand the search area.
