Chemotherapy identified as potential booster for cancer vaccines

Researchers have identified a mechanism where certain chemotherapies can act as adjuvants to boost the efficacy of cancer vaccines. According to a study published in ‘Cancer Cell’, the combination of cyclophosphamide or the duo of carboplatin and paclitaxel (CarboTaxol) can amplify therapeutic T cell responses in preclinical models.

The study, involving scientists from the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research and the NDM Centre for Immuno-Oncology, found that these chemotherapies modulate the functional traits of CD8+ T cells. This modulation allows for a more robust response to subsequent vaccinations.

Furthermore, the research indicates that the therapeutic effect is enhanced when the chemotherapy and vaccine regimen is supplemented with anti-PD-1 immune checkpoint blockade (ICB). When correctly timed, this combination can synergize to improve tumor control and extend survival in preclinical studies.
