Chemours, DuPont, and Corteva settle North Carolina PFAS claims for $455M

Chemours, DuPont, and Corteva have reached a $455 million settlement with the state of North Carolina and 11 local entities regarding PFAS contamination. The lawsuits alleged the companies polluted drinking water with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, commonly known as ‘forever chemicals.’

The settlement addresses contamination linked to Chemours’ Fayetteville Works plant as well as other historical discharges, including pollution from aqueous film-forming foam. This agreement resolves claims from North Carolina and local governments that were not included in a 2024 U.S. public water system class settlement.

Payments will be distributed over a 15-year period. Under a 2021 agreement between the three companies, Chemours will cover 50% of the total cost, while DuPont and Corteva will split the remaining half. Chemours expects to pay approximately $50 million within the first 12 months of the agreement.
