Chemring Nobel AS expands production amid surging NATO demand
Chemring Nobel AS, one of Europe’s two major producers of high-detonation explosives, is facing massive demand driven by the war in Ukraine and NATO requirements. The company’s revenue grew from 300 million NOK in 2021 to over 900 million NOK in 2025.
To meet this “enormous” demand, the company is expanding its facility in Sætre and exploring the construction of a new factory in Hurummarka in cooperation with Norwegian authorities. However, the expansion faces local opposition.
Due to national security interests and the threat of sabotage, the Sætre plant is subject to strict security laws and a no-fly zone was implemented last December. The Norwegian Police Security Service (PST) has specifically warned of potential sabotage attempts by Russian intelligence.
