Chen Wu, CPPCC Vice Chairman, dies in Beijing
Chen Wu, a high-ranking official and Vice Chairman of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), died of illness in Beijing on August 24, 2026, at the age of 72.
His death follows the passing of former Premier Zhu Rongji on August 12. Reports indicate a notable trend of deaths among high-level Chinese officials and military personnel throughout August 2026. Since August 1, at least eight provincial-level officials, three high-ranking military officers, and four academicians have reportedly passed away.
Chen Wu had a long career in Guangxi, serving as the Chairman of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region before moving to national roles. His recent absence from several high-level CPPCC meetings was noted prior to his death. The period of increased mortality among officials coincides with a reported rise in COVID-19 infections in mainland China.
