Cheng Chao-fang faces scrutiny over governance and finances

Cheng Chao-fang, the Mayor of Zhubei and a candidate for Hsinchu County Magistrate, is facing scrutiny regarding his governance and personal finances. A local volunteer has publicly expressed declining trust in Cheng, citing concerns over public safety during heavy rains—specifically a fatal incident on Boai Street—and questioning whether his focus on urban aesthetics, such as the Fude Library, prioritizes personal branding over essential city management.

Furthermore, allegations have surfaced regarding Cheng’s family finances and land dealings, including claims of a 40-million-TWD loan. While Cheng has denied allegations involving 260 million TWD, critics are calling for greater transparency and evidence to clarify the flow of funds.

In response to the intensifying election campaign, Cheng has criticized opponents for using smear tactics and mass black propaganda. He maintains that his administration has delivered tangible improvements to Zhubei, such as market renovations and social subsidies, and asserts that his focus remains on policy and urban development rather than political attacks.
