Cheng Li-wen advocates for cross-strait peace and KMT reform

Kuomintang (KMT) Chairperson Cheng Li-wen has emphasized that peaceful options exist for cross-strait relations, asserting that communication and exchange can prevent conflict between Taiwan and China. Following her visits to Beijing and Washington, D.C., Cheng noted that reducing tensions serves the interests of Taiwan, mainland China, the United States, and the international community.

Regarding U.S.-China relations, Cheng observed that while the U.S. administration seeks to reshape strategic relations, the decades of competition and mistrust between the two powers will take time to resolve. She expressed anticipation for potential progress during a scheduled meeting between U.S. and Chinese leaders in late September.

On domestic party matters, Cheng addressed her ongoing reforms within the KMT, stating her goal is to reshape the party's core values to better engage with younger generations. Addressing speculation regarding her own potential candidacy for the 2028 presidential election, she clarified that her responsibility as chairperson is to establish fair systems and nominate the strongest candidates rather than tailoring rules for any specific individual.
