Cheng Li-wen criticizes donation of Coast Guard vessel to Philippines

Kuomintang (KMT) politician Cheng Li-wen has criticized the government's decision to donate a decommissioned Coast Guard vessel to the Philippines. Cheng argued that the move is “rubbing salt in the wounds” of Taiwanese fishermen, who she claims have been forced to retreat in maritime disputes due to a lack of government support.

While the administration maintains that the donation aims to improve maritime law enforcement capabilities and reflects strengthened Taiwan-Philippines relations, Cheng questioned why a vessel was chosen over other forms of diplomacy. She expressed concern that the ship might eventually be used against Taiwanese interests rather than protecting local fishermen.

Cheng also referenced past maritime incidents to highlight what she described as a pattern of government retreat regarding fishing rights in disputed waters, contrasting current policies with previous maritime peace initiatives.
