Chennai Airport capacity to reach 35 million passengers by 2027
Chennai Airport is projected to increase its annual passenger capacity to 35 million by April 2027 following the completion of Terminal 3. Airport director Raja Kishore stated that the facility currently handles approximately 23 million passengers per year, with an existing capacity of 30 million. The new terminal is expected to add an additional five million to the annual capacity.
Expansion efforts are being conducted within the current airport premises, and there are no immediate plans to expand beyond the compound wall. However, authorities are planning to develop cargo facilities.
Construction of a major stormwater drain intended to prevent waterlogging near the runways has faced delays. To comply with aviation safety regulations requiring a 140-metre clear area from the runway, the drain is being realigned from its original 110-metre plan. Work must continue without disrupting the more than 375 daily flights operating from the airport.
Additionally, the airport is improving passenger facilities by installing sanitary napkin vending machines in all 36 women’s toilets, with full installation expected by October 15.
