Chennai Airport Expansion Accelerates with ₹236 Crore Investment

India's civil aviation minister Muraleedhar Mahali said the second phase of Chennai International Airport’s expansion is now in full swing. Over the past five years, ₹236 crore has been spent on upgrading the airport’s infrastructure, positioning it as the fifth‑busiest airport in the country by passenger traffic.

The new terminal, slated to open after the Phase‑II works, will boost capacity to handle up to 3.5 crore passengers annually. The expansion also includes upgrades at nearby airports: a new air‑traffic control tower at Tiruchirappalli, a perimeter wall at Coimbatore, and additional facilities at other regional hubs. Mahali emphasized that there are no scheduling conflicts for flights and that the project will significantly improve passenger experience and regional connectivity.

Once completed, the upgraded facilities are expected to accommodate growing air traffic in South India and support the airport’s role as a key gateway for domestic and international travelers.
