Chennai allocates funds to repair 678 rain-damaged roads
The Greater Chennai Corporation has announced plans to renovate 678 rain-damaged roads following widespread complaints regarding potholes and waterlogging. An allocation of Rs 130.19 crore has been designated for the project, which aims to improve 148.10 kilometres of road network across 15 zones under the Chief Minister’s Urban Development Scheme.
Statistics from the corporation indicate that potholes have developed at 8,110 locations, with repair work currently underway at 5,350 of them. The renovation programme will include repairs to 595 bituminous roads and 58 cement roads. Work is scheduled to commence once the tender process is completed and contracts are finalized.
Motorists, particularly two-wheeler riders, have reported significant hazards as rainwater often conceals the depth of potholes. The corporation maintains over 30,000 roads, including major thoroughfares and residential streets, all of which are subject to varying levels of damage from recent rainfall.
