Chennai-Arakkonam AC suburban train launch faces passenger backlash over high fares

The launch of a new air-conditioned suburban EMU service between Chennai Central, Avadi, and Arakkonam has drawn significant criticism from commuters due to high ticket prices. On its first day of operation, passengers reported paying Rs 230 for the 68-km journey from Arakkonam to Chennai Central, and Rs 200 for the 48-km trip between Avadi and Arakkonam.

Critics have pointed out a major disparity in pricing compared to the existing AC EMU service on the Beach–Chengalpattu line. That service charges Rs 105 for a 59-km journey, making the new Arakkonam route appear significantly more expensive.

Official sources indicated that the high cost stems from the fact that the section beyond Tiruvallur has not yet been integrated into the suburban ticketing system. Consequently, fares for that portion are calculated under regular non-suburban tariffs. For example, while the fare from Chennai to Tiruvallur is Rs 90, the fare from Tiruvallur to Arakkonam is Rs 180. This pricing structure resulted in low passenger numbers beyond Tiruvallur during the initial launch.

The new service is currently operating on a two-month trial basis until December 24, running on weekdays with three pairs of trains designed to provide an AC alternative for commuters on the western corridor during peak hours.
