Chennai heat exposure causes income loss and illness for workers
A community-led study conducted in Chennai's Vyasarpadi and Ramapuram neighborhoods reveals that extreme heat is significantly impacting the health and livelihoods of informal workers. The research, titled ‘Future Amidst Scorching Heat: Understanding and Building Heat Resilience in Ramapuram and Vyasarpadi’, surveyed 260 residents between late June and early August 2026.
In Vyasarpadi, 28.4% of workers reported losing at least one working day due to heat-related illness, with some losing up to six days. In Ramapuram, 16.9% reported lost workdays, with some cases reaching 15 days. The study highlighted severe lack of resources, noting that 38.8% of Vyasarpadi workers had no shade at their workplace, 44.8% lacked afternoon breaks, and 37.3% reported no access to free drinking water.
Health consequences were widespread. In Vyasarpadi, 94.7% of respondents reported dehydration or excessive thirst, 78.2% reported headaches, and 68.4% reported exhaustion. Hospitalization rates due to heat were 38.3% in Vyasarpadi and 21.3% in Ramapuram. The study also noted low awareness of heat prevention protocols and limited access to public drinking water and medical facilities in these vulnerable communities.
