Chennai heat spikes as surface temperatures reach 64°C amid urban heat island
Measurements across Chennai on a day when the official temperature was reported as 38 °C showed surface temperatures far exceeding the air reading. Concrete pavement recorded about 54 °C, a tar road on Anna Salai hit 60 °C, and sand at Marina Beach reached 64 °C, while shaded areas stayed near 29 °C. The disparity illustrates the urban heat‑island effect, where dense infrastructure and limited green cover create localized hotspots.
The India Meteorological Department forecasted continued warm conditions, with daytime highs of 35‑37 °C and high humidity. Light, scattered showers are expected on July 31, offering only brief relief. Authorities advised residents to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged sun exposure, and exercise caution on potentially slippery roads during brief rain spells.
