Chennai infrastructure improvements focus on passenger accessibility
Authorities in Chennai are addressing accessibility challenges across major transport hubs. At Tambaram railway station, the Chennai Division of Southern Railway is accelerating the installation of nine additional lifts and ten escalators. This initiative aims to assist senior citizens, women, and persons with disabilities at the high-traffic NSG-1 category station, which serves approximately 1.78 lakh passengers daily.
Several lifts and escalators are expected to be operational between mid-November and December. Additionally, railway officials have instructed porters to use wheelchairs instead of carrying passengers on luggage trolleys and to adhere to prescribed rates.
Separately, passengers at Chennai International Airport have reported difficulties at the multi-level car parking facility. Travelers using Terminal 2 and Terminal 4 have noted that lifts in the east section are too narrow to accommodate passengers with large suitcases and luggage trolleys simultaneously. While airport authorities stated that lifts in the west section are designed to accommodate both passengers and luggage, travelers have reported long wait times and inconvenience due to the capacity constraints in the eastern section.
