Chennai infrastructure projects impact pedestrian safety

Infrastructure projects in Chennai are causing significant safety challenges for pedestrians. On Arcot Road, between the Vadapalani Bus Terminus and Vadapalani Junction, the absence of footpaths is forcing commuters to walk along busy roads. This issue is exacerbated by ongoing Metro Rail and storm water drain works, which have further narrowed the available road space and contributed to traffic congestion.

In Ambattur, the construction of a subway near the railway station has faced delays, leading commuters to risk their lives by walking across active train tracks. Southern Railway officials stated that while the railway portion of the subway is nearing completion, work is stalled due to continuous waterlogging inside the structure. The railway administration is currently coordinating with the Greater Chennai Corporation to drain stagnant water from the approach road to allow for the final installation of footpaths and ramps.
