Chennai intensifies mosquito control following dengue surge

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has launched an intensive mosquito-eradication campaign following a significant surge in fever cases. Since August, the city has recorded over 6,400 fever cases, with approximately 1,900 reported in a recent two-day period, including 600 confirmed dengue cases.

GCC Commissioner GS Sameeran has mobilized over 3,700 workers to combat the outbreak across all 15 zones of the city. This workforce includes 2,076 personnel dedicated to door-to-door inspections, fogging, and chemical spraying. Domestic Breeding Checkers are tasked with inspecting residential and public areas—including overhead tanks, sumps, wells, and air conditioner units—to identify and eliminate mosquito breeding sites.

In addition to field inspections, the corporation plans to intensify fogging operations, conduct dengue-awareness programs in schools, and organize medical camps in high-risk areas. Health inspectors will also monitor field teams and visit the homes of patients to identify potential breeding sources near their residences.
