Chennai Metro Water seizes 34 illegal suction motors

The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) seized 34 illegal electric water-suction motors during inspections across seven zones in Chennai on Monday. The enforcement drive targeted residential properties and commercial hostels in areas including Tondiarpet, Ambattur, Anna Nagar, Teynampet, Kodambakkam, Adyar, and Perungudi.

Utility officials stated that attaching booster pumps directly to distribution lines reduces water pressure, which deprives neighboring households of equitable access to the supply. Following the seizures, the board issued warning notices to property owners and cautioned that repeat offenders will face legal action under municipal laws.

This operation follows a previous drive in the Adyar zone that resulted in the confiscation of 55 motors, bringing the citywide total of seized pumps to 89. CMWSSB has formed special monitoring teams across all 15 zones to maintain round-the-clock surveillance of domestic lines and public taps to ensure fair water distribution.
