Chennai police probe fertility clinic over child theft allegations
Chennai police have launched an investigation into a private fertility clinic in Kolathur and a couple following allegations of child theft. The complainant, K Megala, a 27-year-old daily wage labourer, alleges that her newborn son was handed over to a childless couple from Tiruvottiyur by hospital staff.
Megala stated that after giving birth on July 29, 2025, the hospital initially claimed the infant required isolation, only allowing her to see him 10 days later. She further alleged that a doctor suggested she allow the couple to care for the baby for three months before returning him, an arrangement she claims she agreed to. However, when she recently requested the child's return, the couple refused.
Police have booked a doctor at the clinic and the couple involved. Investigators noted that the complainant's accounts contain contradictions and are currently examining the circumstances under which the child was transferred to the couple's custody.
