Chennai Port operationalises empty container yard to increase capacity
Chennai Port Authority has operationalised a dedicated Empty Container Yard (ECY) within its Custom Bound Area as of September 1, 2026. This initiative is designed to improve container-handling efficiency by shifting empty containers away from main terminal areas.
By relocating empty containers to the dedicated yard, the port aims to release valuable terminal space for laden and transshipment cargo. This strategy focuses on smart capacity augmentation through operational innovation and the optimized use of existing infrastructure rather than relying solely on new physical assets. The project was implemented through a collaborative model involving the port authority, terminal operators, and shipping lines.
