Chennai property tax deadline approaches amid calls for rate reviews
Property owners in Chennai and the Tambaram corporation area face a September 30 deadline to pay property taxes for the first half of the 2026-27 financial year to avoid penalties. The Greater Chennai Corporation has stated that late payments will incur an interest rate of 1% per month on the outstanding amount. Payments can be processed via zonal offices, the official website, mobile applications, or WhatsApp.
In response to the deadline, the United Federation of Residents Welfare Associations of Tambaram has petitioned Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay to review and rationalize tax rates in areas such as Chitlapakkam. The federation argues that there are significant discrepancies in rates compared to other Chennai localities. For example, a 1,500 sq ft residential building in Chitlapakkam faces an annual tax of ₹26,812, whereas similar properties in areas like Anna Nagar pay significantly less.
The associations are calling for an extension of the payment deadline to allow residents to voice grievances. They have also requested the formation of an expert committee to review rates based on guideline values, road conditions, and available civic facilities like water supply and drainage.
