Chennai road excavations cause traffic hazards in Velachery and Tambaram
Motorists in Chennai are facing significant safety hazards and traffic delays due to unrepaired road excavations on the Velachery Main Road and the East Tambaram-Velachery Road.
On Velachery Main Road, near the TNPDCL Substation, a stretch dug up for high-tension cable laying has been left uneven, with only stones placed over the excavated area. Residents and motorists report that the unstable surface poses a risk to two-wheeler riders, pedestrians, and the elderly, with minor accidents already occurring. A TNPDCL official stated that while the cable work is complete, the road will be restored with concrete soon.
Simultaneously, on the East Tambaram-Velachery Road, excavations for drinking water pipelines have caused severe disruptions. Heavy rainfall recently inundated these damaged stretches, concealing deep pits under stagnant water. This led to cars, lorries, and a Metropolitan Transport Corporation bus becoming stuck, resulting in major traffic congestion. Commuters have criticized contractors for failing to properly refill excavations and restore the road surface, particularly during the monsoon season.
