Chennai Super Kings overhaul coaching staff ahead of IPL 2027
The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are undergoing a major coaching overhaul ahead of the IPL 2027 season. Former Indian pacer Zaheer Khan has been appointed as the new head coach, succeeding Stephen Fleming, who stepped down after a 16-year tenure. The restructuring also includes the appointment of Mohit Sharma as bowling coach following the departure of Eric Simons, and the exit of long-serving batting coach Michael Hussey.
Former Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has suggested that MS Dhoni will likely transition into a formal mentorship or advisory role rather than continuing as a regular player, especially following Dhoni's absence during the 2026 season due to a calf injury. Ashwin also noted that the franchise may seek an Indian replacement for the batting coach position, citing Ambati Rayudu and Robin Uthappa as potential candidates.
This transition follows a difficult period for the franchise, which has failed to reach the playoffs in the last three seasons and finished eighth in the 2026 edition. Ashwin emphasized that the new leadership under Zaheer Khan and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad may need to implement a more rigorous training culture to adapt to the evolving demands of the tournament.
