Cheonan City to deploy AI-powered four-legged patrol robots

Cheonan City has announced the introduction of four-legged patrol robots integrated with artificial intelligence to enhance public safety. This initiative is part of the Ministry of Science and ICT’s ‘On-device AI Service Demonstration and Expansion Project’.

As a result of approval from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy’s regulatory sandbox committee, Cheonan is the first city in South Korea permitted to allow four-legged robots to patrol pedestrian walkways. The robots will be deployed to verify safety services at Cheonancheon Stream, Cheonhoji Lake, and Samgeori Park.

Developed by consortium partner Maum AI, the robots utilize ‘physical AI’ technology to recognize surroundings. They are designed to detect crisis situations such as river flooding or criminal activity, provide evacuation guidance, and transmit real-time data to control systems to support initial emergency responses. Because they can navigate stairs and slopes, they are expected to cover safety blind spots that traditional CCTV cameras may miss.
