Cheongsong Hosts First International Elementary Kendo Tournament with Taiwan Participation

The 9th Cheongsong‑gun Sugi National Elementary School Kendo Tournament was held on 25‑26 May at the Cheongsong Citizens Sports Center. More than 600 participants, including athletes, coaches and officials from across South Korea, gathered for the competition. A team of 19 Taiwanese elementary kendo players took part for the first time, marking the event’s inaugural overseas participation and highlighting prospects for cultural exchange and sports diplomacy.

Organisers, led by Cheongsong County Mayor Yoon Kyung‑hee, said the tournament showcased local talent, helped expand kendo among schoolchildren, and injected economic activity into the region through lodging and dining. The county plans to upscale the event into a formal international competition next year, aiming to boost sports tourism and promote Cheongsong as a sports‑marketing hub.
