Cherbourg court hears case of organized tobacco smuggling ring

Seven defendants appeared before the Cherbourg criminal court on Tuesday to face charges related to an organized tobacco smuggling ring operating between Luxembourg and the Manche department. The network, which involved family members, is estimated to have moved more than four tons of tobacco between September 2024 and December 2025.

Investigators revealed that the group utilized rental vehicles and private garages for storage, managing orders through a dedicated phone line serving over one hundred clients. During a police raid in December 2025, authorities seized nearly 500 kilograms of cigarettes and over 168,000 euros in cash. The total scale of the operation is estimated to have involved approximately 2,216 cartons of tobacco.

The defendants face various charges, including illegal importation, transport, possession, and sale of tobacco, as well as money laundering. Customs officials estimate the total fraud loss at over 1.3 million euros and are seeking full reimbursement plus penalties. The prosecution has requested prison sentences ranging from six months to two and a half years. A final verdict is expected on November 10.
