Cherbourg ranked as France's top climate refuge against heatwaves

Cherbourg has been ranked as the top French city for climate resilience regarding future summer heatwaves. According to a study by Le Parisien, the Normandy port city scored 16.09 out of 20, placing it ahead of other northwestern cities like Lannion and Brest.

The evaluation analyzed 452 urban areas with populations exceeding 20,000, using 26 indicators. These metrics included projected average temperatures, the number of tropical nights, and the availability of healthcare and housing infrastructure for the year 2050. Most high-ranking cities are located in Normandy, Brittany, and Nord-Pas-de-Calais.

In contrast, municipalities in the Mediterranean basin and the Parisian suburbs, such as Avignon, Orange, and Cavaillon, ranked lowest due to intense heat and poor housing insulation. While Cherbourg's status as a "climate refuge" may increase its attractiveness, the region faces its own challenges, including risks of storms, droughts, an aging population, and potential housing market pressure.
