Chernobyl fungus Cladosporium sphaerospermum shows potential for space research
Researchers are studying Cladosporium sphaerospermum, a black fungus discovered within the containment structure of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor 4. Unlike most life forms, this organism thrives in extreme radiation environments by utilizing a process known as radiotropism.
The fungus uses melanin to capture ionizing gamma and beta radiation, acting as a biological transducer to convert it into chemical energy for growth. This process, referred to by scientists as radiosynthesis, is being investigated for its potential applications in protecting astronauts during long-duration space missions.
