Cherokee Nation announces elder support and pop culture event

The Cherokee Nation is implementing a $4.5 million investment to support elders facing rising living costs. The expanded Elders in Need program will increase annual benefits from $400 to $600 and triple the number of eligible participants from approximately 1,400 to 4,200. This initiative, funded by the Public Health and Wellness Fund Act, aims to assist low-income elders with utility bills, groceries, and medications.

Additionally, the fifth annual SkasdiCon will take place on November 14 at the Chota Conference Center. The event celebrates Indigenous creativity through art, gaming, and cosplay. The convention will feature over 60 Indigenous artists and film screenings designed for language revitalization, including popular films dubbed in the Cherokee language.
