Europe faces severe agricultural losses from drought and heatwaves
Extreme heat and prolonged drought are causing severe agricultural losses across Europe. The European Commission projects that overall agricultural yields in the EU could fall up to 14% below the five-year average. Regions in Central and Western Europe, including France, southern Germany, Italy, Austria, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania, are facing the most significant damage.
In Slovakia, the impact on fodder crops is particularly acute; the first alfalfa harvest saw losses of 30 to 40 percent, while the second cut exceeded 50 percent. In Bavaria, Germany, the Bayerischer Bauernverband (BBV) reports that drought is causing significant yield losses in wheat, rapeseed, corn, and potatoes, leading to a depressive mood among farmers. The BBV is calling for political support, including diesel tax relief and accident insurance relief.
Austria is also heavily affected, with drought-related agricultural damages estimated at approximately 1.08 billion euros in 2026. Experts from BOKU Wien warn that current agricultural business models may no longer be sustainable due to climate change. In Poland, the fruit harvest is expected to decline significantly, with a projected 18.6% drop in total fruit production for 2026 compared to 2025.
