Cherry juice promoted for better sleep and cardiovascular health

Cherry juice, especially from the Montmorency variety, naturally contains melatonin and tryptophan, nutrients that help regulate the sleep‑wake cycle. Health experts suggest drinking about 240‑350 ml one to two hours before bedtime, though people on certain medications or with diabetes should consult a doctor first.

Research also highlights cardiovascular benefits. In a study of 37 adults aged 65‑80, participants who consumed 480 ml of tart cherry juice daily for 12 weeks showed lower systolic blood pressure, reduced LDL cholesterol and lower total cholesterol compared with a control drink lacking cherry polyphenols. The juice’s anthocyanins and other polyphenols are thought to improve vessel function and reduce oxidative stress. While promising, cherry juice is not a replacement for medical treatment but can be a useful addition to a healthy diet.
