Cherry laurel identified as invasive threat to German forests

A study from the University of Bonn, published in June 2024, highlights the invasive potential of cherry laurel (Prunus laurocerasus) in German forests. While popular in private gardens as a fast-growing, evergreen privacy screen, the plant is classified as a neophyte that can displace native species.

Due to its ability to produce thousands of fruits that spread easily into lawns, flower beds, and nearby woodlands, experts warn that cherry laurel poses a threat to local ecosystems and forest structures.
