Chery expands UK presence with new models and R&D centre

Chinese automaker Chery is expanding its presence in the United Kingdom through new product launches and the establishment of a research and development centre. Following a first year in the UK that saw over 29,000 vehicle registrations and a market share exceeding 2.5%, the company plans to introduce four new or updated models over the next 12 months. This expansion includes the debut of Chery’s first electric vehicle in the UK and enhancements to its Chery Super Hybrid (CSH) system across its TIGGO line-up.

To support its European growth, Chery will open a passenger vehicle R&D centre at UTAC Millbrook in Bedfordshire later this year. The facility will focus on adapting vehicles to UK driving conditions, with future goals involving autonomous driving and AI. This move follows a previous agreement with Nissan to assemble vehicles at the Sunderland plant. Chery’s international operations have seen significant growth, with the company recently becoming the first Chinese automaker to exceed 200,000 monthly vehicle exports.
