Chery OMODA 5 rear axle detaches in Malaysia
A Chery OMODA 5 SUV experienced a major mechanical failure in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, on October 6, 2026, when its entire rear axle, including two wheels, detached from the vehicle body. The incident occurred near the AEON Mall Tebrau City on Jalan Pandan.
Chery Malaysia is currently conducting a comprehensive technical investigation to determine if the detachment was caused by a manufacturing defect, a mechanical failure, or a prior traffic collision. The vehicle showed visible damage to the right rear door, which may be relevant to the investigation.
This incident has drawn significant attention because a nearly identical failure occurred in April 2024. In that previous case, Chery identified a welding issue caused by an improperly calibrated machine and subsequently issued a recall for 600 Omoda 5 vehicles. It remains unconfirmed whether this new incident is linked to the previous production issues.
