Chery Omoda 5 recall and sales suspension in Malaysia
Malaysia’s Road Transport Department (JPJ) has suspended new registrations of the Chery Omoda 5 following a serious safety incident in Johor Bahru where a vehicle lost its entire rear axle assembly while driving. The suspension of the model’s Vehicle Type Approval (VTA) remains in effect pending a technical investigation into production, assembly lines, and component suppliers.
Chery has initiated a recall of 8,878 Omoda 5 units (specifically C and H variants) in Malaysia to conduct inspections and replace necessary components. The manufacturer identified that insufficient weld strength on the trailing arms could cause the axle to detach under extreme conditions. This marks the second major recall for this model in Malaysia, following a smaller recall of 600 units in 2024 for similar issues.
While the recall is centered in Malaysia, Chery is also conducting safety checks on 2023 Omoda 5 models in other international markets. In Indonesia, Chery Sales Indonesia stated they are monitoring the situation and awaiting results from Chery global, noting no similar incidents have been reported locally. The Omoda 5 is also sold in markets such as Turkey.
