Chery targets European expansion amid Malaysian vehicle recall
Chinese automaker Chery is pursuing an ambitious expansion strategy in Europe. The company plans to present its roadmap at the 2026 Paris Motor Show, aiming to be present in 27 markets with 1,143 sales and service locations by 2027. By the end of 2026, Chery intends to operate in 20 European Union markets. The manufacturer aims to increase sales from approximately 100,000 units in 2026 to 300,000 units. Its lineup will include internal combustion engines, full hybrids, and plug-in hybrids.
In Slovenia, importer Grand Automotive (GA Adriatic) will introduce four initial models, including the Tiggo 4 Pro, Tiggo 7 Pro, Tiggo 8 Pro, and the flagship Tiggo 9 plug-in hybrid. Prices for entry-level models are expected to start around 18,000 euros.
Separately, Chery has issued a recall for 8,878 Omoda 5 SUVs in Malaysia due to potential defects in rear axle welds. The recall follows an incident where a vehicle lost its rear axle while driving. Investigations suggest that some welds on the trailing arms may lack sufficient strength, posing a risk of cracking under extreme conditions. Malaysian authorities have suspended type approval for the Omoda 5 pending further technical investigation.
