Chester Bridge demolished via controlled implosion
The 80-year-old Chester Bridge, which spanned the Mississippi River to connect Illinois and Missouri, was demolished via controlled implosion on Monday, September 28, 2026. Hundreds of spectators gathered to witness the event as explosives brought the historic truss structure down into the river.
The old bridge, dating back to 1942, was known for its narrow two-lane design, which often caused traffic delays and required police escorts for large agricultural machinery. It has been replaced by the $307.1 million Don Welge Memorial Bridge, a joint project between Missouri, Illinois, and federal authorities. The new structure opened to traffic in July and is expected to improve safety and local commerce.
Demolition crews performed the operation with precision to ensure the adjacent new bridge remained undamaged. Local officials noted that the new bridge will alleviate the frequent traffic disruptions and flooding-related closures that plagued the previous crossing.
